My interest in the sensory aspect of art materials stems from my lived experience as a carer.
The use of tactile and varied art materials provides a wealth of sensory experiences. That can soothe, excite, interest and reignite memories and feelings. Although there is no need to be able to verbalise in Art Therapy, using art materials can initiate conversations and help with talking. One of the reasons is that it provides lots of opportunities to just observe simply what is happening in the moment, rather than having to rely on memory or complex sentences.
